California Recognizes Islamic Holidays, Drawing Praise and Criticism

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 2017, formally recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha under California law. The decision has received support from Muslim advocates while prompting criticism over the government’s treatment of religious observances.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha occurs during the annual pilgrimage season. The legislation allows public schools and community colleges to close through local approval procedures and provides eligible state employees with an option to observe the holidays using holiday credit. It does not establish automatic closures across California’s workplaces and schools.

Supporters describe the measure as a practical accommodation for Muslim families. CAIR-California welcomed the signing, saying formal recognition helps residents navigate conflicts between religious observance and their school or work responsibilities.

Critics see the decision differently. In comments reported by CBN News, Rabbi Michael Barclay accused state leaders of political pandering and questioned whether religious communities receive equal consideration. His characterization of the measure as “effectively Sharia law” represents his opinion, rather than a description of the legislation’s provisions.

California’s existing holiday calendar also deserves attention. The state’s human resources department lists December 25 among employee holidays, contradicting suggestions that Christmas receives no official recognition.

The debate raises a broader question: How should government accommodate religious observance while treating different faith communities consistently? Answering that requires examining the actual benefits and rules attached to each holiday, alongside the political arguments surrounding them.
